Why Supplemental Lighting Planning Matters

Greenhouse lighting is not only about choosing a fixture. Crop targets, natural light, mounting height, layout,

and control strategy all affect the final result.

Natural Light Is Not Stable

Season, location, greenhouse covering, and weather conditions affect daily light availability.

Uniformity Affects Crop Consistency

Uneven PPFD can lead to inconsistent growth, production variation, or research uncertainty.

Each Greenhouse Needs a Different Layout

Crop type, bay width, mounting height, and target DLI affect fixture quantity and spacing.

Early Planning Reduces Rework

A project-based lighting plan helps avoid fixture mismatch, layout changes, and installation delays.

Baseline Layout

593.2Max PPFD
0.54Uniformity
Engineering evaluation
  • Stronger localized intensity in the center of each bench.
  • More visible PPFD decay toward the bench perimeter.
  • Limited overlap between adjacent fixture groups.
  • Useful as a baseline reference for performance and cost comparison.
Option 2

Balanced Low-Budget Layout

Preferred low-budget option

Optimized 2-row layout · same fixture count and connected load

Option 2 balanced greenhouse lighting layout and PPFD contour
Optimized lighting layout / PPFD contour — broader overlap across each bench.
Option 2 original PPFD distribution simulation

434.2Avg PPFD
262.3Min PPFD
520.9Max PPFD
0.60Uniformity
Engineering evaluation
  • More balanced PPFD distribution across each bench.
  • Improved overlap without increasing fixture quantity or total power.
  • Reduced localized hotspots and better edge-to-center performance.
  • Better balance between cost, uniformity and research usability.

Why Option 2 is the preferred low-budget layout

Both layouts use the same number of fixtures and the same connected load. Option 2 improves minimum PPFD from 247.0 to 262.3 and uniformity from 0.54 to 0.60, while reducing the highest hotspot from 593.2 to 520.9. The result is a more balanced light field without increasing hardware cost.
